Mauro Montalbetti is an Italian composer born in Brescia in 1969. He graduated with honors in composition from the “Giuseppe Verdi” Conservatory in Milan, studying with Paolo Rimoldi and Irlando Danieli. His career includes numerous recognitions, among them the prestigious Johann Joseph Fux Opera Composition Prize, which he won in 2006 with the opera Lies and Sorrow.

His work includes operas, orchestral music, chamber music, and vocal compositions. His pieces have been commissioned and performed by major institutions and ensembles such as the Filarmonica della Scala, the Venice Biennale Musica, and various theaters and festivals in Italy and abroad.

Among his most notable works are Il sogno di una cosa, performed in several Italian theaters and broadcast on national television, and Another’s Hell, performed by the Filarmonica della Scala Orchestra under the direction of Daniel Harding.

From 2021 to 2023, Montalbetti served as Artistic Director of the Cantiere Internazionale d’Arte in Montepulciano, strengthening his role in the Italian contemporary music scene. He regularly writes for voices and instruments, with a personal language that combines research, expressiveness, and a strong attention to text.
