Leo Nucci – president of the jury

A baritone among the most acclaimed on the international scene, he made his debut at the Teatro alla Scala in 1977 as Figaro. In 1978 he was at the Royal Opera House with Luisa Miller and in 1980 he performed with Luciano Pavarotti at the Opera de Paris in Un ballo in maschera. He participated in the film production of Macbeth, presented at the Cannes Film Festival in 1987. Among the various productions are Simon Boccanegra conducted by Sir. Georg Solti, Tosca, Rigoletto, Il Trovatore, Nabucco, Macbeth, La Forza del destino, I Due Foscari and Otello conducted by Riccardo Muti. In 1989 he performed in Salzburg under the guidance of Herbert von Karajan. During the Nineties he repeatedly plays the Verdi’s roles of Rigoletto and Nabucco at the Arena di Verona; in 2001, 100th anniversary of the death of Giuseppe Verdi, Leo Nucci is engaged, in addition to the Teatro alla Scala, in the major opera houses and concert halls around the world with Verdi’s productions – Il Trovatore, Un Ballo in maschera and a new production of Nabucco in Wien; Attila in Zurich; Macbeth in Paris; at concert “Verdi 100” conducted by Zubin Mehta in Parma. He has been named “Kammersänger” of Wiener Staatsoper. In 2005 he participates in the new production of La Forza del destino at the Opernhaus in Zurich; in 2001 he is in Rigoletto at the Arena di Verona, in 2007 in Nabucco and in Il barbiere di Siviglia. In 2008, at La Scala in Milano, he plays roles in Macbeth and Gianni Schicchi. In 2011, on the occasion of 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy, he participates in the production of Nabucco at the Opera di Roma. In August 2012 he is at the 63rd Dubrovnik Summer Festival; in 2017 he sings Rigoletto at the theatre of Orange, with Nadine Sierra, and at the Arena di Verona. He retires from the stage on 27 November 2021.
